Material Culture; how the academic staff at university dress

Material Culture; how the academic staff at university dress; part of my weekly journal LING210's work @UOW

One of the “material culture” that I am not familiar with, is how the academic staff at university dress. Seems that there is no clear dress code for academic staff at university. Some could wear very nice and presentable, while some could wear smart casual, some wear very casual and some even go extreme that considered to be quite “sloppy” or under-dressed. Guess that it is really up to each individual preferences.

From Thai culture perspective, we view lecturer or academic staff as “knowledgeable” and honorable occupation. The way academic staff wears should be projected as respectable and presentable. However, it doesn’t have always to be suit or necktie. It can be something nice and polite as black pants, shirt and black leather shoes. It is understandable that the life style here in Australia is viewed as an “easy going”. However, as a lecturer or academic staff at university, wearing t-shirt with a hole and slipper with untidy hair is just too much to bear.

Again, having say that, I am accept and respect each individual choice of their wardrobe. I am pointing this out as the difference between Thai culture and Australian culture. I wish for nothing to be changed, as I am accept thing as the way things are. But one just have to be aware of the differences, that is all. Just hope that the lecturers here know what to wear when they have a chance to give a lecture or seminar in Thailand. Otherwise, that can be quite embarrassing as well.

It is harsh reality that people can easily be judged from their appearance or image. But, guess that we just have to go with the flow. That is how we survive in the society.
